The Aztec and Mexicans for that matter, would be better off without European intervention, and US intervention, because the Europeans and US took so much of our lands and reasources, now mexicans today have to suffer for it. Thanks a lot US, and Europe.

If it wheren’t for europeans, the americans would today research the wheel. Se fossemos nós ainda comiam formigas por um pau.

Generally, most of the Victims were prisoners of war. This is known in part because of what the revolting tribes told the Spanish, in as much as they could understand each other. It has been postulated that some were even volunteers. Though I find it odd that they should need to hold a volunteer down as he had his heart cleaved out as the contemporary artwork depicts. Im sure it was a combination. This doesnt excuse the Spanish, but it sheds some light on the two cultures.

The Heart Jesus holds is not dripping with blood. Over and over again the Mexican, Central and some South American civilizations depicted and celebrated blood sacrifice. Art aside, the skull racks, the flint knives, the heart bowl statues all were real. You can see them in museums today. The Aztecs considered the slaughters Sacrifice, not the Europeans. Besides, most europeans at the time supported the human sacrifice of at least one person. But all sacrifices are wrong as no such gods exist.

Actually most of the sacrifices were voluntary. Even for the prisoners of war. When a warrior was captured he believed that the only way to restore honor was through sacrifice. It was kind of like the Japanese samurai practice of sepaku, only more public. The Mexica had one festival for each month of the year. But not every festival featured human sacrifice. The actual number of sacrifices is actually far lower than most people believe.

Human sacrifice was a common practice among most of tribes in Mexico. Despite what you might have been told, their practices were really no bloodier than that of any other tribe. It was a waring states era and the Mexica were winning. That is why so many of their rivals allied themselves with the Conquistadores. They saw it as their chance to turn the tables. It was a decision that most of them would admitadely regret.

Once again, I point to the art that the aztecs themselves painted, where “volunteers” were held down as their hearts were cleaved. Of course this does not include the victims of Tlaloc, who was appeased by drowning children. Somehow I doubt the kiddies were so eager to be held underwater.

I’m not defending their practices. I’m just trying to help people see things from their point of view. As you have pointed out they did include children in one form of sacrifice, but only children whom they knew were already sick and dying. This was seen as an act of mercy and a way of giving their deaths meaning. And yes, most sacrifices were voluntary. Do you honestly expect a person not to move as they are having their heart cut out, there is a large amount of pain involved.

Human sacrifices were only made during special ceremonies, not daily. A festival was held at the end of each month. It is during these festivals that sacrifices were made, not all of them human. Sacrifices of food and animals were more frequent. I should also be noted that such numbers as 84,000 or 20,000 were most likely exaggerations made by the Spanish. In truth, only about 300 to 600 people would have been sacrificed in a year through out the empire.
